  17. <p>    The terse announcement from Buckingham Palace last week
  18. that Princess Anne and her husband Captain Mark Phillips had
  19. decided to separate was no surprise. Though tattle about the
  20. foundering 15-year marriage was always denied, it grew more
  21. persistent as the couple spent less and less time together. Most
  22. of the gossip dwelt on outside romantic liaisons, but the
  23. marriage, which produced two children, may have simply been a
  24. dreary mismatch. ANNE WANTED HER FREEDOM, blared the Daily Mail,
  25. claiming that the princess was tired of years of pretense.
